RTCC pic vs DS1307 + MCP2200
PostPosted: Tue Jul 06, 2010 10:42 am     Reply with quote

Hi !

Design( prototype - proteus ISIS) is already working fine with external component DS1307. I like to add another external component for UART to USB conversion CDC function (MCP2200). I would like to use less external components.
Both tease functions could be found in different PIC, but my limit is deadline to present a OK working prototype.

-------- DS1307 vs RTCC ------
- If The power goes off DS1307 keeps ticking, how i can solve this problem with PIC? Low voltage detection and quick work flow product loss elimination? + how to keep PIC RTCC ticking during external power source failure?

--------MCP2200 --------
So far as i understand there will be no need for complicated configuration code for simple functions as one way communication. My target is only sending data for information purpose to final user laptop PC without additional software. Can i get what i want by connection PIC UART Rx Tx pins + some more external components to MCP2200.

Thank you in advance !

Google is the best place to search for an answer. Use this search string:
Quote:
site:microchip.com RTC battery backup -forums

Here are some typical hits:
http://techtrain.microchip.com/webseminars/documents/EmulRTC_010407.pdf

Here are two more examples of how to do the schottky diode circuit:
http://www.mikroe.com/pdf/rtc_board_schematic.pdf
http://www.dontronics.com/pdf/4D-16F73-Module.pdf
These use an external RTC, but the same circuit can be applied to a PIC.

Using the MCP2200 a very easy way to get USB communication. Check out these sites if you need details on using that component:
