18F8620 Port J and ICD-U

I am trying to contol bits 6 amd 7 of this port.
What ever I try has no effect on the TRIS or Port
Can you drive this port individually or is some other setting stopping me controlling this port
I am running the latest version of the compiler.
Trying any other port works OK
Look forward to any ideas

Port J can be used for the External Memory Interface, instead of i/o.
The port configuration is affected by the mode that you're running
the PIC in -- microprocessor mode, microcontroller mode, etc.
It can also be affected by the EBDIS bit in the MEMCON register.

The PIC's mode of operation is controlled by these fuse settings:
MCU
CPU
CPU_BB
EMCU
These fuse settings control the settings of the PM1:PM0 bits in
Config register 3L. See the data sheet in Section 23.1 for more
information. CCS uses MCU mode (microcontroller mode) by default
if the mode fuse is not specified. In that case, Port J will operate as an
i/o port.

So, what mode are you running the PIC in ? Answering this will
probably tell how to fix the Port J problem.

The problem seems to that the ICDU debugger is showing the wrong memory location for the portj port, looking at the ram shows that it is all OK, and now checking on the hardware it is OK
I am running in MCU mode
