First, use their development kit and get the 3DM unit working on the PC
with their software. It comes with a serial cable to connect to your PC.

After you prove that the 3DM unit works on your PC, then you can
consider how to connect it to a PIC board.

Post a link to the webpage on the Microstrain website for the unit that
you have. Where is it on this website ?

You did not post a link to the exact product.

On the website,
http://www.microstrain.com/inclinometers.aspx
there is:
3DM-GX1
3DM-GX2
3DM-GX3-25
They are all "G" and all different products.

Someone else can help you on this thread.

That page doesn't have any real documentation on it. By using Google,
I was able to find the user's manual:
http://www.microstrain.com/manuals/3DMUser403.pdf
The communications protocol for the 3DM unit is described starting
on page 24.

It has two modes, "polled" or "continuous" mode. Apparently it defaults
to polled mode.
