It doesn't sound like this needs a microprocessor at all. Look at the web sites of a few power converter chip companies like National Semiconductor, Linear Technologies, Maxim, etc. and you should be able to find chip to do what you want _________________ The search for better is endless. Instead simply find very good and get the job done.

How much power?
It's already been suggested you look at a dedicated chip for the job.
Unless it's a school project and you HAVE to use a PIC.
By their very nature boost converters can be dangerous!
