How does the an Ethernet device detect a switch when they are connected together with a cat 5 cable? Does the ethernet device constantly send out frames until the switch responses?

An ethernet switch does not respond to anything.

All a switch does that an ethernet hub does not do is remember MAC addresses of devices attached to it and which port they are attached to. This then removes excess traffic from parts of the network for which data is NOT intended.
