do write/read _configuration_memory work on the PIC18F2550 ?

I'm trying to use
write_configuration_memory(ramaddress,count)
read_configuration_memory(ramaddress,count)
set program configuration bits - with no success.

Has anyone done this. Am I missing some non-obvious
(or obvious) magic. Are there any gotchas here.
That is do interrupts have to be turned off while this
happens or something like that?

Any help appreciated.

1. Post a complete, compilable test program.

2. Post your compiler version.
