Frame Grabber with PIC18
PostPosted: Thu Oct 11, 2007 9:45 pm     Reply with quote

Hi,

I need to capture a frame grabber (bitmap) from a CCD with a PIC18 and send this bitmap to other device by serial port.

Anybody know similar project?, which is the best CCD for this job?

Thank you very much!!

Best Regards,

Setiously, choose another chip....

To do this properly, requires you buffer an entire frame from the CCD. Even with a small CCD, you will be typically talking over 1/4MB of data. You _can_ do it with a PIC, and external memory, but it'll be more complex, than using a chip which supports an external RAM directly. The PIC is not a 'good choice' for this type of application.
It is a bit like saying, that you 'can' hammer a nail in with a spanner, but it is a lot easier, if you use a hammer!....

If this is for a large application, then I'd be looking at performing everything in a FPGA. However if this is a limited number off type project, then look instead at buying a pre-built camera module, containing the CCD, and it's control electronics already running.
As for 'what is the best', it'll depend totally on what you want. Colour, mono, resolution required, sensitivity, operating temperature range, etc. etc..

Best Wishes

ttelmah,

I think the same that you, but I found a good choice for my project in www.comedia.com. They have a camera with serial communication.

Thanks,

Cfernandez,

I am looking for a frame grabber for a black & white CCD and browsed the Comedia's site and found nothing about this issue.

Could you help me with more specifics about Comedia?

Thanks,
