Sometime ago (before people started writing their own implementations of fat16 / 32 ) it was a common practice to format a card (mmc / sd / compactflash /etc) in the PC, creating only one file and then putting it on the microcontroller system. The microcontroller jumped some number of bytes and started writing sequentially on the media, and the PC could see a big file with all your data. I´ve lost the refference i had describing this tecnique. Does someone still have it? Any help will be apreciated.

Oddly enough, I saw a reference to this today. This is a project that uses some form of the method you described.
