| Which Complier to get? |

Hello Everyone.
I am want to move from writting my programs in picbasicpro to using the ccs complier but just wanted to know a few things.
1.)
i want to buy the PCM Command-line Compiler but what i want to know
is that because this is mainly for 16F PIC eg 16f877, when i do
migrate to the 18F series do i have to buy the PCH?
2.) Or should i buy the PCWH if i want to use both 16F & 18F series

This thread describes the two most common paths you can take
with regard to buying compiler(s) and a debugger with CCS:

Vs. 4.xxx of the compiler is in a beta stage right now. But you can
download vs. 3.249 from the CCS download page. However, given
the limited time period for initial download rights (is it currently 30
or 60 days ?), there may not be enough time for vs. 4.xxx to become
fully usable (ie., out of beta) during your download period.
This situation could lead to some irritation. Just be aware of this.
Also, be aware that CCS is giving away the PCB compiler (vs. 3.249)
with MPLAB. They made a deal with Microchip to do this. Probably
because not that many people use PCB. I copied the PCB.DLL, and
the .CRG file, and the #include files to my normal PICC directory
(which already had vs. 3.249 of PCH and PCM) and now I have all
three compilers. |

I would take option 3. Buy PCH now. If you are already using the 16F877 move to the PIC18F4620 (pin compatible, faster, far superior instruction set, more ram, more FSR, superior peripherals, SAME COST). The port from 16F to 18F in assembler is not too difficult. My first experience was migrating from a PIC16F877 to the PIC18F452 involved a large, complex program in assembler. I had the code ported in a few hours. Then over the next few days, as I understood better the 18F architecture, I was able to optimize the code specifically for the 18F leading to a 50% increase in performance of my app for the same clock speed.

Thanks for your reply i would go for the PCM for now and when i getgood at writting C program i would move to PCH
