strange behavior of printf()

i am unable to understand this strange behaviour of printf()

printf(lcd_putc," \%s",latiStr);

out is OK.But after
latitude = atof(latiStr);
printf(lcd_putc,"\%f",latitude);

Output is like -543. 17248

any idea what is wrong ?
