Serial Port Conventions.....
PostPosted: Mon Aug 07, 2006 7:41 pm     Reply with quote

Hi All,

I'm designing a project that will be marketed commercially. This product (test equipment interface) will be controlled by a PC. By convention should the serial port on an embedded device like this be a male or female DB-9 connector, and should it connect to the PC using a null-modem, or a straight-thru serial cable? I know it can be made to work in a couple of different ways, but I like to follow conventions on this one because it will be used by many people besides me.

Thanks,

Tom

It should be a female DB-9, and a straight-through cable should be used.

See the PicDem2-Plus User's Guide for a schematic.

Unfortunately the old serial port is going the way of the dinosaur on the PC. You may want to consider if USB or Ethernet would be a better proposition than serial for a product to be marketed commercially.
