using monitor pin and ucd-U40 but not the IDE

How can I view the serial data comming through the monitor pin and then through the icd-u40 and into the PC without opening the ICD. Can a FTDI virtual com port and siow be used?
update:
CCS responded to my request by saying" perhaps we will include this in a future update" I take that as a brush off.
