USB + Ethernet + PIC
PostPosted: Mon May 15, 2006 8:16 am     Reply with quote

Hi everybody:
I have in mind one question.
Is it possible to implement something like this:

Whatever you want to manage---PIC<-->USB<--->Ethernet USB "Card" <---> UTP<---> Rest of the world.

Where your development finish with the usb. Or am I wrong and I am missing something here, please let me know . Thanks a lot

You cannot do this directly with a PIC as it requires USB Host functionality. However you could get an external USB host controller. But looking at your scenario, why would you bother when you could use the ENC28J60 Ethernet controller connected to the PIC via the SPI bus.

It's, probably possible, if you can find a "Ethernet USB Card" that acts as a USB host.

If you "just" want ot connect the PIC to Ethernet, take a look at this thread. http://www.ccsinfo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26992

The answer is that I was looking for the easiest way to do it.
On the other hand I think for me here at the bottom of the world is difficult to find some components such us the black box right after the RJ45 connector (do you know which one I mean?) I think is an impedance adapter. So I dont know which is the way, help wanted... bye

Have a look at http://www.digi.com

Several external serial RS232 to UTP-ethernet converters for 1 to 4 serial ports: http://www.digi.com/products/externaldeviceservers/index.jsp
They look great but aren't cheap (from US$150)

Or several embedded mobules: http://www.digi.com/products/embeddedsolutions/embeddedmodules.jsp

I especially like the looks of the small embedded ' Digi Connect ME' module which is just a tiny bit larger than an UTP-connector: http://www.digi.com/products/embeddedsolutions/digiconnectme.jsp
Contains an ARM processor and webserver, sells for around US$50

Your ethernet controller will have more processing power than the PIC you want to access. Cool
