16F876 and 16MHz Xtal
PostPosted: Thu Aug 18, 2005 8:15 pm     Reply with quote

Trying to get a 16MHz Xtal to run my 16F876-20/SP PIC.
Compiler set to HS and I have correct caps on XTAL.
PIC will start, maybe run for bit, maybe not, when it stops, the XTAL has stopped. I can run all day at 4MHz.
Anyone had this sort of problem with the 16F876 chip?

At what voltage are you running it? Check the voltage. There might not be enough voltage to run the PIC at 16 Mhz but sufficient for running at 4Mhz. Or may be the voltage is not stable. try putting capacitors.

Just a quick guess.

running at 5VDC.
voltage seems stable on scope.

Do you have a 'spec' for your crystal?. The obvious possibility is that it has a relatively high loss, and the oscillator is just not giving enough gain.
