simple bootloader question, can I protect my work?

I would like to protect my software, but is it possible to keep people from reading the chip and still use a boot loader?

I would still be able to bootload a tiny app to dump the flash over the rs-232 and extract the full firmware.

I think the only solution is to write your own encrypted bootloader and protect the PIC from external reads.
