Stariting with CAN
PostPosted: Fri May 27, 2005 11:47 am     Reply with quote

Hi all! I 'm doing an MSc project and part of my project is to succeed data transfer over CAN bus. I am new in CAN bus so I would like to ask some very very basic questions.

Which would be the easiest way to implement and demonstrate the transfer of a CAN message? Using 2 PICs and displaying the message on an LCD or maybe using a PIC and a PC? If I choose the second method what hardware/software do I need in order to make my PC capable of receiving and sending CAN messages? Maybe an RS232 to CAN? Means of software in this case?

Or maybe another option? What would you suggest?

Thank you all in advance!

You can buy a USB to CAN bus adapter for your PC.

Click on the screen shots to see their software.
I haven't used the one above. We've used the Kvaser USB to CAN
adapter, but it's a lot more expensive than the one above.

CCS has a PIC-to-PIC development kit.

I am using the grid connect usb to CAN adapter and would recommend it to anyone. It is very cost effective. Also the adapter comes with software(source code) so you can modify or add other functionality to it.

Very easy to use. I use to (and still have a couple of Deerborn adapters and they cost me $2,500.00 each and no source code.
