Choosing an LCD for PIC16F877 and CCS PCW
PostPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2005 3:48 am     Reply with quote

Hi All,

Being a complete beginner, I am a bit confused with how to drive an LCD and what type of LCD to purchase (in the UK) for my project.

I am requiring a 2x16 LCD, on reading through this forum the term HD44780 what is this? (a std protocol i presume).

Are there any companies that supply LCD in the UK that I can get advice from?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The HD44780 is the drive chip on the LCD, usually interfaced to the PIC with a 8bit or 4bit wide bus and some hand shaking lines.
I have bough LCDs from Craftdata http://www.craftdata.co.uk as well as http://www.farnell.co.uk and RS http://rswww.com in the UK. I would think 95% of 2 x 16 line LCDs you can find will have the HD44780 "interface".

I still get a nice warm feeling when I get a LCD running in a new project :-)

Keep well,

Will
