12f269 calibration loss on reprogramming

We program our 12F629s in circuit. Usually the first time we program we have no problems. If we need to change the firmware sometimes we have some fall out (failed programming). Looks like the calibration bits get erased. We are using either the Promate II or the PM 3. We also read protect the chips. My question is will read protecting the chips prevent the programmer from saving the calibration memory? Does anyone have any idea as to how the calibration could get blown away using the above programmers?

By calibration memory, do you mean on-PIC EEPROM? A far as I know, on-PIC EEPROM is used as a buffer during the programming of the PIC regardless of the programmer (I'm using PICstart and ICD-U40). Loss of the EEPROM contents during re-programming is unavoidable.
