Compiler issues

Ok, I've posted numerous times before on where to begin and what to buy to start my journey into PIC. So I bought the IDE from P.H Anderson a few months ago. I waited till the semester ended to play around with this. Now, my teacher gave me a copy of the CCS compiler... the only thing is that the registration fails... it's ICEPIC32. So, I have no idea if anyone here can help me with this. I'm not sure if I should now buy the compiler from ccs... and if I do, which one... I think the PCH because I have the IDE.. but it goes for $300+!!!! I really want to get into this, I even bought the C for PICmicro microcontrollers V2.0 by Rob Miles. It comes with a compiler... but I'm not sure how to implement that one with MPLAB. I just need to be told in laymen's terms what I must do.... Thanks in advance ~ John

No one else has answered this yet, so I'll try.

1. You said your teacher gave you a copy of the CCS compiler,
but apparently the disks say "ICEPIC32" on them.
ICEPIC32 is the program that runs a piece of hardware
that's called an "ICE" (In-Circuit Emulator).

Did he give you the ICE hardware as well ?
I can't imagine giving that to a beginner. You should
be doing programs like printf("Hello World");,
not using an ICE.

2. You said you bought an IDE from Peter Anderson.
I'm not certain that he sells anything called an "IDE",
so you probably bought one of his ICD products.

Can you identify which one you bought, by looking at
the page above ?

3. You think you might have to buy PCH. But, it's likely
that the product you bought from Peter Anderson is for
the 16 series PICs, which means you need PCM. You can
get that for $125.

4. The book you bought from Rob Miles appears to come with
a copy of Pavel's C2C compiler. What version, I don't know.

If you end up using that compiler, they even have a forum.


I think since you bought an ICD from Peter Anderson, you
should email him and confirm exactly what you need to finish
putting together your development environment. </font>
