PIC16F873 - Changing CCP1 value but not affecting frequency

Hi,
I'm using the Compare function to generate variable frequencies depending to a value read from PortB. I write to CCP1 to establish the default frequency and this works fine. While running I write to CCP1 again to change the freq but no effect. I read the CCP1 reg and output the value to PORTC. The CCP1 value is changing with the PortB reading but the interrupt frequency does not change???

Any ideas why this is possible??
