Sorry, it's a bit off-topic.

We are developing a sensor for use on J1939, and need something to simulate the ECU and test the bus side.

What do you recommend? Low cost is always preferred here Smile

Honestly, get a real ECU ! NOTHING can 'simulate' the real world better than real world equipment.
'simulators' might 'work' for some signals for some conditions, but they don't 'simulate' noise, glitches, odd waveforms, etc. very well if at all.
If your sensor is to be a commercial product you need to do proper testing(heat, humidity, weather, cold, vibration, etc.) and NO simulator does that.
Better to spend a few dollars now of a real ECU than to spend thousands later, trying to firgure out why the sensor doesn't work in the real world 'but it did in the lab, on the simulator'.

Thanks for your opinion, but I do know what I am doing, and right now I need a simulator for the ecu which can be configured to talk to my sensor.

A quick googling found a few ECU simulators ..at around $200 a unit. Not a bad price IF it'll simulate what you need to do. I sure couldn't build one in 2 hours in the R&D lab,so a ready made product would my first choice.
You might google for an evening, maybe, someone has a PIC solution for you, I know Microchip had several 'hits'.

I know that if you ask google the right keywords, it's amazing what result you get !

You buy the programmed chip for $80 or the entire simulator for $140 here:

What we can find in "ECU simulators" are ECU OBD simulators. This is the wrong side of the ECU for me. I need the vehicle bus side, not the diagnostic side.

CANoe with a suitable interface does exactly what I want, but as the cost is about 10K, I can't have it.
