OT- no choice - SOLVED!!! - Solution Added

After 2 hours wasted trying to find a solution in the vast uselessness of the microchip forums... I can't get my pickit3 to work on win7 64.... so i come here for yet again, your kind help... seems this is the only place where people participate with the intention of giving a solution.

Uninstalled mplab 8.60 ... reinstalled... nothing
uninstalled all HID drivers .. watch them install again once the pick kit was connected...

Works perfectly fine on my "vintage" Pentium 3 running xp...
using mplab 8.60 as well...

... i hate usb...

brand new computer... brand new compiler.. new project... USB kills the dream again....

I appologize... its 12:00 am... tiered.. frustrated...

edit... I don't see it enumerate.. or in my device manager... nothing says pickit 3 at least.

Don't know if this helps, but I have it working on WIN7 64 with MPLAB 8.76. Works fine.
I have just had a look, and the pickit get reported in device manager as a "HID compliant device" and "HID compliant consumer control device"

You can try to remove the device from windows, this has worked for me in the past with other crap (USB) devices.

Type the following 2 commands into a cmd window.

Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
Devmgmt.msc

When the device manager opens, go to "view" and select "show hidden devices". Remove anything that is grayed out and starts with HID. Worst think that you can do is uninstall you keyboard or mouse. Don't stress, just reboot the computer to fix.


What is the issue you are having anyway? Does MPLAB report when you select the pickit as the programmer? What is the status LED on the pickit doing?

i get "PK3Error0038" on MPLAB... Ive read every thread i can find related to this error in the microchip forums.... nothing usefull...

tried running everything as admin... nothin...

2 lights on the pickit on... no blink...

i tried removing every HID device on my machine... rebooted millions of times- nothin

Just my 2 cents...

Is there a special reason why you stick with the old MPLAB v8.60?
With every new MPLAB there is also included new firmware for your PICKit 3. Last May 11 the v8.85 was released with PICKit 3 firmware v1.27.15.

From the v8.60 PICKit 3 release notes:

no particular reason to stick to 8.60... its just the CD it came with..

But he didn't suggest that. He suggested upgrading to MPLAB vs. 8.85.
That's because MPLAB-X is a whole different IDE. You're adding all the
potential problems and frustrations if you install it, instead of simply
upgrading to the latest version of traditional MPLAB. (In short, going
to MPLAB-X will basically be doing self-sabotage).

The readme for MPLAB vs. 8.85 says this:

Hi PCM, i understood perfectly what he said... and infact i installed 8.85 instead of "x" yesterday noon... still not working.. however i have not had a chance to fully play with it... (work, girlfriend, prometheus came out, i sold my house, national riots, etc)...

i know i said ill install Mplabx... but i didnt... tonight i will dive into it again... hopefully ill get it to work...

ok.... im going to die....

i have the power and active leds on....
ive uninstalled and reinstalled 8.85.... rebooted... uninstalled hid drivers... for everything on my machine....

tried running it as admin... as suggested in microchip forums...

my device manager as soon as i plugge it in says un know usb device... pick kit 3... and then all i see is a new hid device... so i guess its installing properly...

mplab does not see it at all...

so frustrated...

i managed to upgrade the firmware while at it....

so its a local driver conflict issue...
am i supposed to unistall every single driver i have on my device manager?

Now you know why I still use an 'old' XP PRO SP2 machine everyday....
...staying with something that works has it's merits.

...sad to say but the 'newest, latest and greatest' OS or hardware is NOT always a good thing...

Hopefully you'll get the issues 'fixed' before the next 'upgrade' comes along.

heck, I still use 30 year old laptops here....maybe you could dedicate one good old machine to your development ?

Hi Temronic,

As i mentioned in some other post where you commented as well, i kept a 2002 -Sony Vaio, Pentium 3, with XP SP2, purely dedidcated to PICs.
it has dedicated RS232 and Parallel ports too!

but i was forced to change it since the clear screen cover degraded and it imposible to read fine print... or light fonts... i think someone cleaned it with some bad chemical... it still works but its got a 13inch screen.... which makes it even harder to read...

i purchased a new Dell with more power than i will ever need ---- ever....
and thats my new dedidcated PC.... should be good for the next 10 years.

Take a deep breath.

Key is to study what is/isn't working. It appears that MPLAB, and CCS, both 'are', but the real problem is that the PicKit3 device isn't being seen/handled correctly.

Now, there are several threads with the same problem on the Microchip forum:

Now these definately say that the device should work with W7 64, and that it uses the native Windows HID driver.

At the top of the thread, the poster had found he could get the beta standalone programmer software to work!.

The device should just be visible under the HID device entry in device manager.

Has near the end, the poster being told to relocate the files used to get it working - worth trying.

If it still doesn't work, add a post to MicroChip support. The problem is somewhere in the MPLAB stuff, rather than anything from CCS.

Found the issue...
going one by one... on the task manager... ending process ... i got it to work...

its one of 5 possible programs... i assume its conflicting with the hid driver.
