Apart from the significant difference in price, could someone kindly highlight the difference between the PIC16F876 and PIC16F876A please ???

A general description of the differences between the 'A' and the non 'A' devices would be helpful actually.

For hardware differences you could always try the Microchip web site: www.microchip.com/download/lit/migrat/39591a.pdf

I hope you are not planning to use an ICD1 to develop your application - as it won't work with 'A' variants!
