Modbus has a register called 'coils', and a set of commands, to read/write single or multiple 'coils'. The code mirrors what is in the 'coils' register out onto a number of external bits, so they could be used with suitable hardware drivers to control physical 'coils' (solenoids/relays). Look at modbus commands 1, 5 & 15.
