Seriously, try with a real chip.
Proteus, is a good PCB package, and as an _analog_ simulator, is also good, but it's PIC simulation is foul. I have yet to find anything beyond relatively simple code that simulates properly.

I don't agree.
Seriously, even a 100$ chip, is not worth even an hour of a good programmer's time. Even if simulation is 'perfect', you _will_ find problems like noise that only appear in a real circuit. Take advantage of modern prototyping methods (we have a CNC PCB building machine, and pick/place system, that can produce and populate a board overnight), and even without this there are dozens of cheap PCB prototyping companies that will do boards in under 48 hours. The simulator is just wasting time, and costing money...

If you look here:

The people having problems, were with connections, power etc..

Yes, sorry to sound grumpy, but the Proteus PIC simulator gave me so many bugs, and wasted so much of my time, that it actually ranks _below_ CCS, in terms of reliability!... The only piece of commercial software I have ever said this about.

I have to 'second' the 'get rid of Proteus' comments !! Unless YOU wrote the simulation software YOU do NOT know if it is actually working correctly.
I've never found a simulator in 30 years that did NOT have flaw, errors, faulty DRCs, etc.having worked with 15-20 different microcomputer 'families' the school of hard knocks has always said use real chips!
Only real hardware will give you real results.
As for the cost of the components, I've always had good relations with manufacturers and they've given me all the samples that I've requested.Sometimes I have to pay shipping, usually not.

this is the source for one of my favorite simulators --
very affordable - and easy to program with solder Very Happy

disclosure: i have no economic tie to this vendor other than porting $$ to them now and then for more product. i favor these because of the included rs232 level shifter layout and DB-9 F traces AND the wide open lead spacing around the pic that lets one use a ZIF socket for the PIC
