If using the hw SPI is the ss pin then free?

When using the SPI hardware module:

SDI,SDO,SCk 3 pin mode. Is the SS pin the free to use as normal I/O?

It should be available for normal i/o.

As an additional note:
The Slave Select pin is only active when the SPI hardware is used as a slave. In a master this pin is never used and free for normal I/O operations.

Don't place the SS_DISABLED define in your spi_setup call for a SPI master or it will create an invalid setup.
