question about searching forum
PostPosted: Tue Jun 09, 2009 1:25 pm     Reply with quote

I am trying to improve my search results.
But the forum's search-box doesn't seem to fuction as I expect.
For example:

If I enter either of the following in the search box I get 346 hits
day AND of AND week
day of week

The 'goal' I wanted shows up in this post. 3rd entry in the thread
http://www.ccsinfo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38179

But the thread is 31st in the list of 346!

I tried the above with both radio button settings:
- Search for any terms or use query as entered
- Search for all terms
I got the same results for all four combinations of text and radio button.

How can I improve my search results?

Thanks in advance.

You can use Google and do it like this:
Quote:
site:ccsinfo.com/forum "day of week"

True, sage PCM...
But why do neither the radio buttons, nor "AND" seem to function?

Here's the documentation for the Search engine:
http://www.phpbb.com/support/documentation/2.0/#section4_5

Based on that, I tried the following search string:
Quote:
day*week

I got 12 hits, and the 2nd one is the thread that you wanted.
So, that looks like a good way to do the search.

I found that site based on the forum FAQ. I went there to look and ran screaming from the room.
Yep, that seems to work pretty good. Here's the wall that made my search problematic: Crying or Very sad

Quote:
To increase the speed and decrease the overhead of the search utility, only words may be searched for.
Phrases (such as "cheese wheel") may not be searched for, except by their component words.
The minimum size for words is four characters, and the maximum size is twenty characters.

I tried the search *day *of* *week and the web response was so slow I though I broke something Embarassed

Thanks for your help.
