opto coupler suggestions.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 02, 2009 12:27 pm     Reply with quote

Sorry that this is off topic question.
I am looking for suggestions for an opto coupler for between my
PIC and max232DR (for a bit more lightning protection).

I would like a 2 channel, logic to logic opto.
I would use 2 of them. TX,RX,RTS,CTS
The things that are most important for me is
1. 2 channel
2. Availability, commonly used in industry
3. cost
4. able to handle 19200 baud rs232

I was just wondering what people are using in this application.

Any suggestions?

ps I would just love if a site like digikey/mouser/newark had a sort for quant. available. This would show me right away what part industry is using.

Remember you will need to generate an isolated supply to run the MAX232, if this is going to give any extra protection.
For RS485, I use the old favourite 4N25/35 or their quad versions happily at 19200bps.
I'd switch to the MAX232E, as the first step in anything.
Also remember that lightning involves a _lot_ of energy and voltage. A normal opto, on it's own will give approximately zero protection. You need to be looking at spark gap protectors on the incoming lines, to clamp transients below the ratings of your isolation barrier, if it is going to help much...

Your right.
I'm using Semtech LC04-12, CITEL BM-CMS 90V,SMCJ20A, NTE0505
and a big copper strap! also a SP720 on i/o's for esd.

Thanks for the tip for MAX232E & 4N25.

Any other suggestions?
