industrial protocols DNP3 / IEC60870-5

Hi everybody

I'm interesting in implementing an industrial protocol for my thesis project. Actually I have a fuzzy control system over a wireless environment (two boards, a master one and a slave one). I use for the project a 18F4550 and a 18F2550 using their USB capabilities, and the TRF2.4 modules from Nordic on the wireless link.

Two questions:
1) It's possible to implement a simple DNP3 or IEC60870-5 stack (only basic commands... show my devices looks like MTU's - RTU´s or IED's)?
2)If it's possible, how complex could it be?

Curiously, although I'm dealing with industrial automation problems (among other topics) since more than 20 years, I never heard of DNP3. Particularly no customer using or considering to use it, or a major vendor supporting it. But apparently, it's yet another automation protocol.

I would expect a complexity comparable to MODBUS RTU, S-BUS or other similar Master-Slave protocols. So it should be implementable within a few ten hours for a uP, e. g. a PIC. Because of the initially said situation, I doubt if you'll find ready to use code.
