Total Newbie Question re: ICD-S RJ11 Pinout
PostPosted: Tue Dec 17, 2002 12:08 pm     Reply with quote

<font face="Courier New" size=-1>I have just purchased the ICD-S but do not have the prototyping board. Can anybody please direct me, or just tell me, the pinout for the RJ11 connector? I have searched the CCS, and the archived forums but did not see anything relating to this. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks-
Eric S.</font>

<font face="Courier New" size=-1>Look at the RJ-11 connector that will plug into the ICD.
If the cable is going down from the connector and the contacts
are facing toward you, then the signals are from left to
right:

NC B6 B7 +5 GND MCLR

I'll try to illustrate the orientation I am looking at:

<to ICD>

[||||||]
[||||||] contact side of rj11 connector
[ ]
|----|
| | cable

<to PIC>

I think the NC wire could go to B5 but I don't use it.

>>Correction: it would go to B3.

Thanks very much! I'll give it a shot- I appreciate the quick and thorough response!

Hi Darren,
Thanks for the new entry. However, on that page I have seen that CCS suggests a 47kOhm pullup resistor on MCLR. According to 16F87X datasheet Page#138 Figure 12.6 Note#2:
"R < 40 kOhm is recommended to make sure that voltage drop across R does not violate the device’s electrical specification."
IMHO a 20-22k resistor and a diode would be much better.
Brg,
Tomi

I used to sell the Advanced Transdata ICD. We used a tel connector box to break out the leads.

See <a href="http://www.phanderson.com/icd_tel_conn.jpg" TARGET="_blank">http://www.phanderson.com/icd_tel_conn.jpg</a>

I have subsequently switched to the Olimex ICD which uses a different connector arrangement.

But, I do have a few wired tel connectors. Send me e-mail off list pha(at)phanderson.com.

Kurt-
Just for future referance please note that it seems like the 5V and Ground lines are switched in your pinout. I thought it was a bit odd that the pinout shown matched that of my "BasicMicro" 2840 proto board with the exception of the power and ground lines. I opened up the ICD-S and matched the correct 5V and ground lines by carefully probing the '876 inside the ICD-S and the RJ-45 (mistakenly called the RJ-11 earlier.) I just now searched this post and found that Darren posted a nice section in the FAQ's which verifies my findings. Perhaps it was a question on mistaking Vcc and Vss? Thanks for your help!
