rcv_buffer_bytes() returns negative values?

The CCS C Manual doesn't explain that the value is returned can be negative and what to do with it.

Can someone help?

usage:
value=rcv_buffer_bytes(stream)

Returns:
Number of bytes in receive buffer that still need to be retrieved

Function:
Function to determine the number of bytes in receive buffer that still need to be retrieve

silly question but... is the variable 'value' been declared an 'unsigned integer' ?
