I've never used the receive_buffer option in rs232 configuration, and there aren't any examples showing how it's used. So, how does it work, and how would it be useful? I have my own buffer I stuff received byte in, but who puts bytes in the receive_buffer?

Don't use it if you have your own handler. Basically if you select it, the
compiler generates a complete RDA interrupt handler and will add the
code to write data to the buffer in this. Big problem it has is no support for
overflows. If the buffer does overflow all the data in the buffer is lost.
It automatically enables INT_RDA and adds it's own routine for this.
