MCLR pin on PIC24
PostPosted: Mon Nov 09, 2009 9:35 am     Reply with quote

Working with PIC for several years, starting with my first the PIC16C71, I have created a habit of always using an MCP100-475 or something similar on the MCLR pin. With the PIC18 and PIC24, should I still be using an external reset or is the internal BOR reliable enough? I am starting a new board with the PIC24FJ with a 3.3V AC to DC power supply. No battery operation, always AC powered. Thanks.

Nobody has an opinion on this?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using an external reset as opposed to BOR? Thanks.

The question is too general to require an answer, in my opinion. Usage of MCLR is necessary, if you have a dedicated reset source, that must be reflected. The question for reliability of BOR is even more vague. How realiable is an external supervisory circuit? It depends completely on your specification. Personally, I'm using internal POR (and BOR, if applicable) in many (not all) applications, with all PICs and other processors, that have it.

Unclear questions don't receive a clear answer by passing them to others, I think.
