Two answers
1.try to get a find the Motorola Application note an669(?) about using their addressable uart. It details what you need to know.Yes, it's old..so am I!

2.for the past 30 years(ugh..), I've used a simple truly single wire, bi directional serial communications hardware system.Goes about 15 MILES but at low speed(24baud).This has been a bullit proof, hackerproof system for remote energy control.Even the wirewrapped prototype is still going strong.

I think I remember an article in Radio Electronics using that modem!!

It was a nice setup.

Motorola made some great chips in those days. Too bad they narfed up their existence when they spun off their semi's.

NXP makes this modem now for powerline apps. Simple -- but not as fast... and has a good datasheet
