Selecting a baud rate for an RS 485 network
PostPosted: Tue Mar 10, 2009 12:16 am     Reply with quote

Hi,

I am in the process of developing several RS 485 based devices, I have been able communicate to these devices...a stepper motor drive unit, a seven segment display controller etc.

What baud rate should I use in the RS 485 network, now I am using 19200 kbps, the max distance between nodes is not more than 15 feet.

The cable I intend to use is 3 core, shielded cable, the terminators are 3 pin round type.

thanks

Don't go any faster than you need to, or than you might need to in the future. Both 9600 and 19200 are common standards. With care over that short distance you could probably use 115200 if you really need to, but don't unless you need to as it just invites headaches.
