PICkit 2 in MPLAB Please help!!
PostPosted: Thu Oct 16, 2008 2:29 am     Reply with quote

Hi guys sorry for the completely off the topic question but i'm in desperate need of some help.

I had to setup some demo boards in a lab and they told me they are going to use ICD2 LE's so they gave me one which i had to setup and test while they wait for the rest. The rest of them arrived today but they are PICkit 2's.

Apparently the guy running the course said they will work and now we will be using some ICD2 LE and PICkit2's. Now i can't get the PICkit2's to work (no extra IDC2 LE's were ordered) to work in MPLAB. Am i missing something, the PICkit2 label in MPLAB is faded??

For me the PICkit2 is working under MPLAB v8.10 and up to now I can do all the things I used to do with an ICD2 but at a much lower price.

Which version of MPLAB do you use?
You did install the software that came with the PICkit?
What version is this software? v2.55.01 is the most recent.
You have the Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your PC? A PICkit installer with .NET is available for download at the Microchip website.
Which OS are you running on your PC? Vista 64-bit support is new and preliminary.

Hmmm.... I'm slow at typing.

I don't know if the PICkit is supported in MPLAB v7.60 you'll have to check the release notes.

If you do start upgrading, then don't use MPLAB v8.00a as it is old. Current version is v8.14

Thanx Indy, I just went through the tedious task of installing MPLAb 8.00a on 20+ PC's. The pickit2 came with v8.00a but i recalled that it had bugs or something so i did not want to install it, also the guy running the course said he wants the students to use v7.60a since they are familiar with it.

Now with v8.00a the pickit2 works (i did notice there was some PICkit app, but it seems to be a 'stand alone' programming interface and sofar it works without it Smile )

When i have time(and energy) i will download the latest version of MPlab and install that. v7.60a does however list the PICkit2 as a programmer option but as mentioned earlier, the option is "greyed out" ???

I myself still use a ICD1 (homemade) for all the chips i program and thus do not have any experience with all the other fancy and overly priced programmers Very Happy
