Who wrote their own USB stack?

I gather that most people use USB library packages written by someone else. Microchip has a stack. CCS has a stack. I have been reading USB Complete and the PIC18F4550 datasheet, and I feel inclined to write my own device firmware for a simple HID device that will just talk to my custom Windows application. My question is, how many of you have written your own USB device code from scratch? My need is not immediate, so I have time to play around. And having code that I understand because I wrote it I think will be a benefit in the long run.

Well - I guess that's the answer - no one responded. I guess everyone is either using a caned stack or an external IC bridge chip. I use the bridge IC approach - Low cost, no PC driver hassles, quick to get working. And in many cases you can get the PID and VID keys for free from the IC manufacturer.

It was a good question and I was interested in the responses also.
