Slightly off the subject but can anyone recommend a reasonably
priced but useful PCB design software?

If you want to make a quick prototype, you can use
this company. You download their layout software
and layout the board. There's no schematic.
The boards are only two-layer, so you have to
grid the ground traces. But it's quick.
I use it all the time.

Try EAGLE. They have a freeware version for smaller double sided boards. Use schematic, convert to board (and autoroute if it is included in the free version). Cardsoft has newsgroups for support where one gets answers quite fast.

I would love to find a program like you discribe. I like p-cad and there is a trial you can use for a month but I don't get enough volume to justify spending $8,000 for a program that would be obsolete before it had come close to paying for itself. Their is just nothing that works well for small scale use.

Take a look at MultiSim (schematic capture and simulator) and UltiBoard (placement, auto-router, etc.) from Electronics Workbench. A few bugs but overall good value for the money. EWB has "Personal" versions of their industrial strength tools. You can get both packages above for about $600 and free demos are available from their web site.
