i found in my internet travels that microchip had a compiler for 16c 16f and 17c parts. why did they stop? any other info would be interesting

Microchip never made any compiler. I think they asked ByteCraft to make one for them (PIC16).
Though I hear that they had more of a hand in making the C18 and C30.
