CANbus and 32MHz oscilator
PostPosted: Fri Dec 14, 2007 12:00 am     Reply with quote

Does anyone know if you need to have matching crystals on devices on the CAN bus?

I have my standard board with a 20MHz crystal and I just ran out of them and only have a 32MHz crystal, should this cause any problems?

thanks

It shouldn't cause problems if you're able to alter the f/w so that it will run with the same bit timing using the faster xtal. If you don't alter the f/w, a board with the new xtal won't be able to communicate with boards that have the old xtal. If this isn't a concern (you don't care about old communicating with new), then it doesn't really matter as long as your maximum bit rate is below whatever the upper limit for CAN is.
