SErial Port Complete by Jan Axelson for general purpose serial communications. Lots of focus on using PCs but good general information.

This forum has lots of serial protocol information. Some good, some bad some pointless. Kinda like life.

MAX485 application notes and data sheets to understand its limitations with respect to speed versus cable length versus cable type versus power.

Google will turn up tons of "information" but it will be up to you to sift through it. Good key words would be PIC, microcontroller, serial port, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485 and tutorial. Combinations of those words should find you nearly everthing you could want.
