ive got the pic sendig at commands to the gsm modem, but when i want to receive a messege alot of unwanted data comes through, can anyone suggest how to get rid of this,

Your question is not very clear to me. When you say you receive a lot of unwanted data, what do you mean? What does the data look like and why is it unwanted?

Use the search function of this forum with a keyword like 'SMS' and you will find many related topics. Check these out and very likely you will find an answer to your question.

Do u mind telling how you connect ur hardware? Are you using MAX232?
I am doing a similar project but I was unable to receive SMS.

i am using the millenium prototype board it has the max 232 chip on it if u search for the schematic it will show u how to connect it
