Using An optic Mouse as an odometer
PostPosted: Wed Nov 24, 2004 12:35 pm     Reply with quote

I Have Taken on a project to see if I can use an optical mouse to measure velocity!!

What I hoped to do was to get a infomation directly from the agilent chip telling me either the velocity or maybe the displacement which i could then differentiate to give me velocity.

The problem im having is coming up with a suitable programme which will get the desired infomation i need from the chip!!

Any help would be appreciated

Well you didn't say what chip but if it is the ADNS-2610 that will allow you to read the x and y change. The max speed is about 1 foot per second or about 0.68 mph.

I overcame that in a project I worked on by using a 10:1 un-telescope to reduce the apparent movement by ten using a microscope objective backwards. It also gave me ten times the depth of field...and protected my hacked up mouse from seawater. I was measuring progress crawling on the bottom of a ship.
Unfortunately the PC programmer on the project never figgured out how to read two mice and combine their readings with the other navigational data we had, so it never got used.

I would love to hear how you make out!
