lease line modem question

Hi,
When using lease line modem, do i need to use ATA and ATD commands to establish the connection? I heard that DCD will automatic on when data starts transferring and off when transfer stops. Is it true?

I would like to know whether there is a carrier exist when the master tries to poll the slaves? And if i am sending data through a UART to this 73M2901 then to the slaves, is the polling data received at the slaves same as the one i send at the master?
