12-bit...14-bit...16-bit

I'm new to this. I hope you all would bear with me.

How do you determine (under which section is this normally listed in the datasheet) if the PIC device is a 12-bit , 14-bit, or 16-bit part?

What does this x-bit refer to?

PIC12 = 12bit
PIC16 = 14bit
PIC18 = 16bit
it is size of instructions Smile

And since there is always an exception to a rule: 12F6xx are 14 bit - go figure.

And what about 16c56? Isn't this a 12-bit?

According to the Microchip product chart (look at the previous posts for link), 16C56 is a 12-bit device.
