I think that's why it works. According to this post from Darren, only
the full IDE can create linkable modules:

Apparently (and I didn't know this), this also applies to using the
compiler within MPLAB.

I don't have the Full IDE. That's why your code doesn't compile for me.
So I can't help you with the debugging questions. I don't have your
same development environment.
